Research Interests:
Chronic liver disease is a progressive deterioration of the liver structure and function due to prolonged conditions of fatty liver, viral infections, drug abuse, alcohol intake etc. that eventually lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver failure. The major challenge with liver disease is the complexity, lack of direct markers for early diagnosis or even an appropriate treatment strategy. Our lab focuses on understanding the mechanisms of progression from fatty liver to steatosis /steatohepatitis and identifying non-invasive direct molecular markers for early diagnosis of the condition. Exploring means to alleviate fibrosis and improve the regeneration by external stem cell intervention has also been the area of interest. Our lab uses mouse as a model for liver disease and cell culture based models for fibrosis and differentiation of stem cells to hepatocytes using 2D and 3D cultures.
